ANZAC DAY REMEMBRANCE RUN
10 YEARS OF RUNNING ON ANZAC DAY
The Anzac Day Marathon started in 2016 with a handful of friends and in 2020 with covid disrupting, there was just a couple of us running in our postcode. Since then the event has grown and in 2025 we had over 120 virtual marathoners across the Gold Coast, Queensland and Australia with over 20 people running on Anzac Day from Runaway Bay. Amazing to see other virtual marathons being run on Anzac Day including one in Canada starting at the same time to match our leaving of Runaway Bay after the dawn service.
Anzac Day is a day to pause and remember all the servicemen and women who have served our country. It is a day to come together and honour our veterans. Our event is a way for each of us to show our appreciation during April and keep each other motivated and moving.
On Anzac Day I am honoured to lay a wreath for my GrandPa and on behalf of all of you and your families at the Runaway Bay RSL dawn service. I am also asked to stand up in front of everyone at the dawn service and share our event and it is an opportunity to thank Runaway Bay RSL for allowing us to be involved before we head off on the annual marathon.
We leave from Runaway Bay cenotaph at 6am with Bruce, the President waving us off. Smiles all round as the group runs the 8km to Southport then onto Surfers Paradise. A few photos at the Surfers Paradise memorial, which is 14km, then along the Ocean path to Hedges, Miami, North Burleigh and arriving at the Burleigh cenotaph just before their morning march. This is 25km, we grab a drink and lollies and leave here approx 9:15am.
We head down Burleigh hill and along the ocean path past Tallebudgera, Palm Beach and down to Currumbin RSL. Only a quick pic near Currumbin RSL as we make our way through the crowd gathering for their morning march. Hitting almost 35km coming into Elephant Rock around 10:35am, as they are packing up from the televised media coverage of the dawn service.
The final stretch is along the ocean path along Currumbin Beach, past Tugun, Bilinga and Kirra. The last couple of kilometres feel long however we know we are almost there. It was such an amazing feeling to arrive at Chris Cunningham Park at Coolangatta/Tweed morning service and completing the marathon distance approx 11:35am.
In previous years, we have had torrential rain, steaming humidity, strong winds, whipping rain and bright sunshine.
We have also celebrated birthdays, received cheers and hi-5’s and kept each other going.
We dig deep, feel the Anzac spirit, strength and mate-ship on this run.
Congratulations to everyone that runs on the day and to the marathoners around the country.
THANK-YOU for joining me
Cheers Sally
